EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Rosie of GLITTERORDIE

FOREWORD :

Hi there, my darlings! As part of the current indie featured giveaway with Glitter Or Die, I have already posted a review of some of the new brand's gorgeous creations! Now it's time for an exclusive interview with the maker along side the super exciting giveaway, so people can get a little glimpse into the world of the face behind the brand! How can one get to know a brand without getting to know the maker a little, right? So, I present to you my interview with Rosie of Glitter or Die! Read on for a peek into the woman behind the brand!

1. How did you first get into making polish?

Well, I’m a tinkerer. I love making things, especially where the arts and sciences are involved. The desire to play with creating my own polish was mentioned to me by my amazing Sister, and 2 years ago for Christmas, she purchased a franken polish kit for me. She went all out, and seriously, glitter is the best present I have ever received! My roommates, my most fabulous best friend and her hubby, even allowed me to convert the garage in to a Mad Scientist Glitter Lab…

2. What was the inspiration for the name "GLITTER OR DIE"? Is there a story behind the name?

Oh, now that’s a funny story; originally it was Glitterspitter. The name stemmed from a day when one of my dearest friends was too caffeinated at a work meeting. She got to thinking about superheroes and decided my weapon would be a Glitterspitter. Unfortunately, after about the fifth person said something like “that sounds dirty”, I decided a change was in order. The logo image is a nod to that, as well as it having a slight steampunk feel. The current name is a bit of a catch all. It’s cheeky, it’s dramatic, and maybe a little ominous, all depending on how you read it.

3. What inspires your collections (or where do you look for inspiration)? What inspired your latest collection? Any hints/ideas about upcoming collections?

So many things! But mostly the things I love: Family, Science, Sci-Fi, the World and the Universe. The most recent was the Sea, and the inspiration was from all the amazing fauna. I had to do some major editing, as ideas just kept pouring out while researching. The next collection, due out May 15th, 2015, is the “Dashing J’s.” It’s the name I gave my awesome swatchers when realizing all of their names start with J! This created a desire to do polishes based on them, and then created by them as well. It has been a most fantastic adventure with @lacqueredmama @jamylyn_nails @jahmynails @bluevelvetlacquer and @gotnail. I consider myself so lucky to have found a group of gals like them.

4. Do you have a favorite indie maker(s)? Favorite mainstream brand?

I may be entirely partial to my real life adored friend I,A.M...Custom Color @iamcustomcolor. A little over a year ago, we realized we live less than 5 minutes away, and have been attached at the hip since.
I also absolutely love Vapid Lacquer, Digital Nails, and Polished M. All three have the most
amazing quality product. But moreover, they are such amazing women. I do have other brands
that I tend to go back to time and again, but these 4 are huge stand outs to me.
Zoya, Orly and OPI are the only brands I seem to keep buying after I fell in love with indies.

5. What are your go-to products for nail/cuticle care?

Nefertiti’s oil, available in my shoppe. It was created because I needed an oil that worked better
than those I had found. I did a lot of research, and a lot of trials – friends and family can attest!
I also love The Body Shop Coco Butter Body Butter and L’Occitane Dry Skin Hand Cream. For
maintenance I use CND Cuticle Away.

6. What are your favorite colors? In general? For summer? For fall?

Generally, Red, Royal Blue, Grey and Black. That goes with everything from clothes, to home decor, to polish. Coral is great for summer, it’s just so bright and happy. Winter is the perfect time to break out the oxblood and eggplant colors. So deep and elegant.

7. This may be hard--but which are your 3 favorite creations so far?

Firefly Squid. It is a sparkling bright blue flakies and glows in the dark, two of my favorite things
in a polish. Then I would have to say Green Eyed, ESQ. It was created to be my sister in a polish. It’s just so darn happy! Light Fantastic, made with my muse @wenchness, as a release for White Elephant, our ongoing collaborative project. It was a difficult and amazing journey to get that
polish to be exactly what we both wanted. But I love it! Next would be OMG!. It is so awesome
to look at, so fun to make, and @jaymylyn_nails and I had a giggle fest over it. Actually, the entire Dashing J’s collection is one that looking at it as a whole, makes me so happy. After that, there are a few customs I have created that may be making an appearance in some of my collections down the road…

8. Do you have any other hobbies? Are you involved with any other clubs, associations, or recreational activities?

I volunteer rehabbing wildlife through www.GoldCountryWildlifeRescue.org from the beginning
of spring through the middle of fall, caring for the animals that stay in an intake facility, and tending to any new ones brought in. It is amazing, and I feel such a sense of awe when spending time with these creatures. This year, I haven’t been able to do as much as years past, as polish is very consuming. I am, however, planning on a creating a collection that the proceeds will go straight to Gold Country Wildlife.
Also, I am a huge Bibliophile. I read, and when I say I read, I mean at least 2 books a week. Anything will do, but I tend to gravitate towards Sci-fi, Steampunk, and Historical Fiction. I’ll let you in on a secret…. Sometimes I can’t put a book down, and will fail to do laundry.
I also just joined a trivia team! Yes, it’s at a bar, but it's actually a tough trivia game each week. Topics range from science to sci-fi, from current events to WWE (I fail every time), and a whole lot of randoms in between.

9. What is your most favorite thing about being an indie maker? What are some of the challenges? What advice would you give to people considering starting their own brand? Overall, are you happy with your decision to get into the indie polish world?

Meeting the amazing people on Instagram, several of which I speak to off of IG every day! Finding the time to interact with the followers, and to market correctly is challenging. Working a full time day job, and volunteering, and spending time with family… leaves very little me time. And me time is now Glitter Lab time. That being said, my advice is to make a plan. Even if the brand you want to start is not polish, make sure you have a plan. Running full tilt toward some crazy idea can invite some disasters, take it from me.
But no matter what, it has been SOOOOOO worth it. It’s so fulfilling when someone squees over a polish of mine! And being able to use the creative part of me with purpose, makes me feel so happy.

10. Fun facts :

Astrological sign : Sagittarius to the core.

Favorite comfort food : Naan and Mochi. Mmmm, must go scavenge for some….

Favorite beauty item besides polish : Water; no joke. DRINK MORE WATER! But when you need more than water, a BB Cream with coverage and SPF!

Favorite fragrance : Midnight Fleur by Nest, its intoxicating.

Favorite vacation destination : A Beach, any one will do.

Favorite candy : Rather have a scone, but I’ll take Reese’s.

Favorite celebrity : Neil deGrasse Tyson an Chris Hardwick.

Favorite family member or friend (you can pick one of each) : Frannie, my sister. Love my little Sea Star to the moon and back.

Most recent read : Crux by Ramez Naam, Prudence by Gaill Carriger, and The Dirty Streets of Heaven by Tad Williams.

Most recent movie you loved : The Imitation Game. It was a brilliant movie.

Favorite TV show and character : Current TV Shows: Doctor Who, Sherlock, Elementary, and The Big Bang Theory. Characters: Jean Luc Picard, Nelix, Doctor, and Quark (all from Star Trek). Yes, you are correct, you are sensing a theme…

If you won a million dollars, first thing you would buy is : A house to make a home. Then promptly leave it and go trek around the world.
