EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Kendahl of FIRECRACKER LACQUER

FOREWORD :

Hi there, my darlings! As part of the current indie featured giveaway with Firecracker Lacquer, I will be posting a review of our special custom duo soon! But in the meantime, here's an exclusive interview with the maker, so people can get a little glimpse into the world of the face behind the brand! How can one get to know a brand without getting to know the maker a little, right? So, I present to you my interview with Kendahl of Firecracker Lacquer! Read on for a peek into the woman behind the brand!

1. How did you first get into making polish?

I've been a polish addict since I was little. I remember saving up change to go to the dollar store to get a new polish at 8 years old. Almost four years ago, I was introduced to indie polish by a dear enabler, and I fell in love with the idea of designing my own polish. I started out with clear coat and eye shadow, but got frustrated with the colors just sinking, so I started researching how to make my own. Initially it was just 'as a hobby', but it gets expensive FAST, so I thought I would try to sell my creations, and here we are.

2. What was the inspiration for the name "FIRECRACKER LACQUER"? Is there a story behind the name?

The name was the hardest part to decide on. I went back and forth with a handful of names before one day, Firecracker Lacquer popped into my head, and after saying it out loud I knew that was it. No real special inspiration there. lol

3. What inspires your collections (or where do you look for inspiration)? What inspired your latest collection? Any hints/ideas about upcoming collections?

I am inspired by EVERYTHING, seriously! I have a notebook full of ideas and things to try, colors to mix, etc. I also keep a folder of pictures on my phone to go to for ideas. My latest collection, the Kissy Face trio, was inspired by all the colors surrounding Valentine's Day. I see so many pastels and light pinks that I wanted to represent for the bright colors, and those mini hearts were begging to be paired with a kick-ass holo.

4. Do you have a favorite indie maker(s)? Favorite mainstream brand?

This is an IMPOSSIBLE question! Favorite mainstream is probably Zoya because it wears really well on me and they run sales all the time. Favorite indie? Merp. Uhh... Pahlish, Darling Diva Polish, Sweet Heart Polish, Bliss Polish, Bohemian Polish... I know I'm missing many. I have so many favorites.

5. What are your go-to products for nail/cuticle care?

Paint Box Polish makes INCREDIBLE mani bombs. Do yourself a favor and go buy a few. I also super love Northern Star Polish's cuticle oils. The salted caramel scent that came out around Halloween is delightful!

6. What are your favorite colors? In general? For summer? For fall?

My favoritest favorite color is hot pink, but I also love turquoise, cyan, bright purple, and any of those colors plus black or white. Those are pretty summery but honestly, I love them all year long. My favorite fall color, which is new and I think means I'm getting old, is gold. I just started liking it last year.

7. This may be hard--but which are your 3 favorite creations so far?

Omg, three? ONLY THREE? Let's see... Your Mom Thought I Was Big Enough, Vio-Let Me Down Easy, and my birthday trio from 2015, shut up they're a group so they only count as one. Oh, and Power Of The Horn and the Deathly Holos. And I'd Sooner Be A Wolf. I can't math, alright?

8. Do you have any other hobbies? Are you involved with any other clubs, associations, or recreational activities?

I drag race! I have a 1968 Camaro with a big block in it that does 9 second quarter miles at 5000 feet. If you know what that means, MESSAGE ME LET'S BE BEST FRIENDS. I also love rock-crawling (Jeeping? 4-Wheeling? Off roading? everyone calls it something different), riding 4-wheelers (at the sand dunes, preferably), camping, and generally just not acting my age.

9. What is your most favorite thing about being an indie maker? What are some of the challenges? What advice would you give to people considering starting their own brand? Overall, are you happy with your decision to get into the indie polish world?

I LOVE making polish. It's so fun and helps me de-stress. Plus I'm a total glitter addict, so an excuse to buy more glitter? Yes please. Challenges? Trying to not accidentally dupe another maker. There are so many awesome people out there making polish that it's hard to not come close to something that's been made, and that's really stressful. People considering getting into this need to realize that it's NOT EASY, like at all. Running any sort of business is rough but especially a business in the creative industry. There is SO MUCH competition out there, you need to really do something to make yourself stand out. You also need to have really tough skin. Not everyone is going to love everything you make, and some might even hate it, and you have to be able to hear that and not take it personally. But, still, I'm really happy to be an indie maker. I really do love doing it.

10. Fun facts :

Astrological sign : Virgo with Leo tendencies (born on the cusp)

Favorite comfort food : All of the things? I love food. I love to eat. My food triangle is based with potatoes, then cheese, then ice cream, then cupcakes. For real.

Favorite beauty item besides polish : Lip balm. Does that count? I own like six hundred.

Favorite fragrance : Passionate Kisses from Victoria's Secret, I'll never feel okay about them discontinuing it.

Favorite vacation destination : The ocean. Any ocean. I love it.

Favorite candy : This is IMPOSSIBLE to answer. I love candy! Smarties (the Canadian kind), Frooties, Razzles, Zero bars, Reese's everything, all the gummy candies... I could go on for days.

Favorite celebrity : Jennifer Lawrence.

Favorite family member or friend (you can pick one of each) : Shelby. Courtney.

Most recent read : Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Most recent movie you loved : Harry Potter, all of them, I've watched them a bajillion times so yeah, recent. Ha! Ted 2, Pan, Jurassic World. Loved them all.

Favorite TV show and character :  You ask hard questions, you know that? Let's go with Game of Thrones and my favorite character has got to be my boyfriend, Jon Snow. (HE IS NOT DEAD.)

If you won a million dollars, first thing you would buy is : a new house with a big shop so that the husband can put his stuff in there and I can park in my garage. And polish. And LuLaRoe leggings!

So there you have it, my darlings! A little glimpse into the world of Kendahl of Firecracker Lacquer!
