EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Alicia of LEESHA'S LACQUER

FOREWORD :

Hi there, my darlings! As part of the FRIEND-AN-INDIE-FRIDAY featured giveaways, I'll also be posting a review of some of the new brand's creations as well as an exclusive interview with each maker, so people can get a little glimpse into the world of the face behind the brand! Today, I present Alicia of Leesha's Lacquer!! Read on for into the woman behind the brand!

1. How did you first get into making polish?
It all started with a Make your own polish kit by Misfits on 8th! I was already frankening polishes, but when I was browsing etsy one day and came across this kit, I was intrigued! My glitter collection quickly expanded and I was learning the ropes and making polishes like crazy for 3 months. After I was comfortable enough with my polish mixing and making skills, my first collection came out 3 months later. I've been selling on etsy ever since!

2. What was the inspiration for the name "Leesha’s Lacquer"?

Leesha is my Nickname. My real name is Alicia, pronounce A-Leesh-a. Leesha has always been what my friends and family call me for short, so it was a no brainer that I wanted to have my nickname in my brand name. As for the Lacquer, Leesha's Lacquer sort of just rolls off the tongue! I adore alliteration!

3. What inspires your collections (or where do you look for inspiration)? What inspired your latest collection? Any hints/ideas about upcoming collections?

My first collection was a collection inspired by my heritage, Native American (Ojibwe to be specific!). I've only ever made 2 collections, My first and last, which was halloween didn't do to well. I'd much rather release polishes when I want and dabble with my one of a kinds. If any requests come for another collection, I'd be more than happy to make another one!

4. Do you have a favorite indie maker(s)? Favorite mainstream brand?

I have so many favorite indie brands! Creations by Lynda, Ellagee, The Devil wears Polish, Nail Nation 3000, I Love Np to name just the ones that first pop into my head. As for main stream, My favorite is definitely hands down Zoya! Their formula is sooo
smooooth! Like buttah!

5. What are your go-to products for nail/cuticle care?

Creations by Lynda cuticle oil! It's the only thing I use regarding nail care, besides my products for doing my own acrylics.

6. What are your favorite colors? In general? For summer? For fall?

I seriously love ALL of the colors. I don't color discriminate! I do tend to be drawn towards blues and purples though. I have WAY too many blue and purple glitters and polishes. It's kind of a problem!

7. This may be hard--but which are your 3 favorite creations so far?

I am quite proud of Song of the Seas (It was featured on Gnarly Gnail's Monthly Must Haves!), Desert Mirage (It's soooo sparkly!) and Life of the Party (It's so squishy, and the colors are all me!)

8. Do you have any other hobbies?

I love to write, Dance (I fancy shawl dance), do crafty things like making decorations for my house and make cards for a card exchange that I'm a part of. I pretty much love to use my creativity in every way possible!

9. What is your most favorite thing about being a new indie maker? What are some of the challenges? What advice would you give to people considering starting their own brand? Overall, are you happy with your decision to get into the indie polish world?

I love to hear the small things that people like about my brand whether it be the hand written card that I send with each order or how much someone loves a glitter combo. It's so humbling to hear that someone is excited to receive my polish!

My number one challenge is definitely getting my name out there, and I think that's a challenge with any indie brand. Since we're new, we need to prove ourselves in the indie world and it's hard to do that when there are so many awesome brands popping up! I definitely take pride in the amount of work that I've put into my brand, and love everything about the work it has taken to get where I am!

If I were to give advice to someone wanting to start their own brand, whether it's lacquer or not, it's to definitely get hands on experience with what you want to do. Do NOT rush into it. It took me 3 months to even get comfortable giving my creations to my friends and family to test. You want to make sure that your brand is a reflection of you and your values. If you have a crappy product, you won't get far! So give yourself time to improve and evaluate what you make.

  2. WOOO ! Common interests all up in this place lol!
Bates motel is CRAZY! It's one of the only shows that is so interesting, I'm actually drawn to sitting down and watching it unlike my usual browsing the interwebs while glancing up at whatever's on!
