1. How did you first get into making bath and body products?
I have struggled with dry skin my whole life! As a child, my knuckles and hands would crack and bleed in the cold weather, and we tried dozens of creams and medicines to help with the dry skin covering my body. It was painful and uncomfortable. I found that soaking in warm epsom salt baths and using simply made products with quality ingredients that are good for you is what helped the most. After doing a ton of research and trying different solutions through my life, I found that I could produce my own body care products tailored for the help I needed most. Combining the ingredients with aromatherapy principles made it even better! I struggle with intense anxiety and often have difficulty shutting my brain and body off, and aromatherapy plus taking relaxing baths and calming my body absolutely helps reduce my stress levelsI launched Lavish Living hoping to share what has helped me with others who are looking to engage in self-care for their physical and emotional well-being.
2. What was the inspiration for the name "LAVISH LIVING BATH BOUTIQUE"? Is there a story behind the name?
My husband came up with the name! I wanted to choose a name that would speak to our philosophy of guilt-free self-indulgence and he nailed it. Thanks, Jay!
3. What inspires your products? What makes you choose one product to focus on versus another?
As you know, dry, painful skin has been an issue of mine, and combining the ingredients I use for my skin/body products with aromatherapy principles made it even better! I struggle with intense anxiety and often have difficulty shutting my brain and body off, and aromatherapy plus taking relaxing baths and calming my body absolutely helps reduce my stress levels! I never thought anything would help my anxiety, short of being on medication which is something I really don't want to choose for myself. Taking baths, setting aside that time for myself to only focus on my own peace and happiness opened my mind and heart to the possibility of living stress-free and I'd like to offer that to someone else who may be going through the same things.
4. Do you have a favorite indie maker(s)? Favorite mainstream brand?
Currently I'm obsessing over Pour Girls' Wax! Laura is super sweet and genuinely cares about her products and her customers. She will go above and beyond!
5. What are your go-to products for nail/cuticle care?
I use Lavish Living Cuticle Oil and Cuticle Butter every single night. My full-time job is in health care, so I'm constantly washing my hands and using alcohol wipes. I'm also doing my nails alot, and acetone takes its toll. Our oil is made with avocado, sweet almond, grapeseed, castor, jojoba, and vitamin E oils (I could go on and on about the benefits of each on your skin and for nail growth stimulation). Our butters (which I also use a hand salve) are made with Shea Butter, beeswax, avocado oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E, Needless to say, I no longer suffer from cracking skin, dry cuticles, and weak nails. Oh and they also come in tons of fun scents!
6. What are your favorite scents? In general? For summer? For fall?
Currently lusting over coconut cream pie and lavender coconut! For summer I love fun berry blends and for fall I love coffee scents.
7. This may be hard--but which are your 3 favorite creations so far?
If I have to choose... Our bubble bars are made with all natural cocoa butter and vegetable glycerin, which are amazing for your skin and help retain moisture and even can soothe irritated skin. They melt into your bath water making it feel rich and velvety. Number two would be our Soy-based Body Butters. Here is another item that has made my skin feel better than ever. It is thick and rich but soaks in quickly and does not leave a greasy feel to your skin. It cleared up all dry patches and soothes irritated skin. Three--I would say our hand and nail care products!
8. Do you have any other hobbies? Are you involved with any other clubs, associations, or recreational activities?
I love nail art! I also crochet and love to cook...pretty much any activity that gives me a creative outlet.
9. What is your most favorite thing about being an indie maker? What are some of the challenges? What advice would you give to people considering starting their own brand? Overall, are you happy with your decision to get into the indie world?
My favorite thing about being an indie maker is absolutely that I get to share my passion with you all, and hopefully provide a platform for others to discover how good it feels to care for yourself!
It definitely is challenging to try to think of how you can make something a little bit different than what others have done and set yourself apart.
My advice to someone starting out as an indie maker would be to stay focused and stay passionate! It can be very easy to give up on yourself if your business doesn't boom instantly. You have to believe in yourself and your product and remember what drives you to create! Every sale is a big sale and every customer is a VIP. Establish good policies and practices and stay on your grind!
I wouldn't change a thing and I am very happy that I am in a position to share what I love with others. I am working on new and exciting things and revamping some old favorites which will release after we relocate our headquarters!
