EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Angie of SASSY PANTS POLISH

FOREWORD :

Hi there, my darlings! As part of the current indie featured giveaway with Sassy Pants Polish, I will be posting a review of a selection of the brand's products soon! But in the meantime, here's an exclusive interview with the maker, so people can get a little glimpse into the world of the face behind the brand! How can one get to know a brand without getting to know the maker a little, right? So, I present to you my interview with Angie of Sassy Pants Polish! Read on for a peek into the woman behind the brand!

1. How did you first get into making polish?

It’s a long story actually! I have always been one of those crafty types. Since childhood, I was always making something from crochet to needle-point to jewelry making, papercrafting, well, pretty much - you name it. And I usually had a tendency to go overboard. I had my eye on soapmaking and became hooked (and expectedly obsessed) after my cousin had made some glycerin soaps for me for Christmas one year. Before long, Natural Beauty Soaps was born in 2001 which quickly became Handmade Natural Beauty to better reflect the evolution of the soapmaking obsession to balms, lotions, salts, etc. Over the next decade and a half, the bath and body line grew to include more of everything, plus cosmetics and candles.

Then after being introduced to the world of Indie Polish and finally taking the time to paint my beat up soapmaking nails, a new passion began. One of color, mixology and creativity. I quickly dove in full-force and after several months of testing, I had my first collection which launched in September of 2015.

2. What was the inspiration for the name "SASSY PANTS POLISH"? Is there a story behind the name?

I very easily could've just added the polish line to HNB, but I thought, wouldn't it be more fun to give it its own identity? I wanted something bold, fun, fashion-forward, and sassy. Then it hit me, Sassy Pants Polish!

3. What inspires your collections (or where do you look for inspiration)? What inspired your latest collection? Any hints/ideas about upcoming collections?

The debut collection features different qualities or characteristics of the fun-loving bold Sassy Pants woman. The names are all fun and sassy (of course) such as “Drama Queen,” “Diva,” and “Ballbuster.”. In following collections I’ve tried to tie that theme in whenever possible. But sometimes, I’m moved by color… and this was the case when creating my latest (Spring) Collection. And try as I might, once I got it in my head that one of the colors reminded me of ice cream colors, it stuck. Might that have something to do with my slight obsession with ice cream? Perhaps. J

I have two additional projects that actually launched last week… one is an April Showers/Spring Flowers duo with Philly Loves Lacquer and is available for pre-order on my website until April 25th. The Mommy’s Time Out Box is a fabulous collaboration of 5 full size polishes and a TON of extra goodies and is available at le Polish’s site until midnight EST on Friday, April 8th.

I have several projects that I’m working in including inclusion in 3 themed “geek” boxes and I’ve also started a monthly trio project where I have the great pleasure in teaming up with two other indie polish brands and we create a fun themed trio. Hint… if you like faeries, keep an eye out for the first one launching May 1st!

4. Do you have a favorite indie maker(s)? Favorite mainstream brand?

There are just too many to name! I’ve really enjoyed meeting and working with other indie makers whom I’ve come to call friends. Collaborating and supporting each other to build our brands together is really exciting. I especially enjoy working with Allison of le Polish… her collaboration boxes are always clever, fun and well organized.

5. What are your go-to products for nail/cuticle care?

I suffered from severely dry, cracked, and bleeding hands since childhood. I tried everything and into adulthood just came to accept it as a necessary evil of fall and winter. That was, until I created my (***warning, shameless plug ahead ;-) *** Handmade Natural Beauty Lotion bar. I will never use anything else for my hands and cuticles now.

6. What are your favorite colors? In general? For summer? For fall?

I think Purple is my favorite color, yet blue was my favorite color for years, then reds and burgundys… Oh I don’t know. I just really love color! I break the rules too. I don’t care what time of the year it is, I wear whatever color strikes my fancy.

7. This may be hard--but which are your 3 favorite creations so far?

Let’s see… my most recent favorite was my first group custom in my Sassy Pants Fans group called “Galaxy Queen”. I was a little nervous that I had a group of people waiting to see if I could bring a polish to life from a picture. Once it came together, I was soooo excited and discovered that I love the idea of customs and decided I want to do more of them. Another favorite of mine is “Temptation,” part of my Valentine’s Day collection. This was a polish that I didn’t pre-envision, it just sort of came together and it is such a unique neutral base with color shifting flakies. The third favorite I think is “Pass the Merlot” which is my exclusive for the Mommy’s Time Out Box. It’s a deep burgundy wine color with gold holographic microglitters. Not only am I a big fan of this color but the inspiration and working with these amazing ladies has been so much fun.

8. Do you have any other hobbies? Are you involved with any other clubs, associations, or recreational activities?

Yes, I’ve got hobbies up the wazoo, lol! I’m so fortunate that after leaving the corporate world, I’ve turned some of my hobbies into my career… soapmaking, candlemaking, photography, graphic design, etc. I also love to make jewelry and will be teaching a group of girl scouts at the YMCA next week to help them earn their jewelry making badge. I also have recently gotten into stamping, papercrafting and decorative planning… (Just got some tiny nail polish bottle stickers for my planner and I’m abnormally excited about that!!)

9. What is your most favorite thing about being an indie maker? What are some of the challenges? What advice would you give to people considering starting their own brand? Overall, are you happy with your decision to get into the indie polish world?

My favorite thing about being an indie maker is that I can play with color and glitter as my job. I mean seriously, there’s glitter!! The biggest challenge I’ve experienced so far is getting noticed. However, I’ve been continuing to develop relationships with great bloggers that are really helping with this. Plus fans are starting to post their hauls and #mysassymanis and I just get giddy with each one I see! The advice I’d give to people considering starting their own brand is first test, then test, then test some more. J After that, establish some relationships with bloggers to help get the word out. Start collaborating with other makers. Participate in giveaways, get your name out there the best you can. Yes, I’m very happy with my decision to get into the indie polish world as well as my decision to keep it separate from my bath and body company. I like to think Sassy Pants Polish is Handmade Natural Beauty’s fun and sassy little sister.
