EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Dave of OCTOPUS PARTY NAIL LACQUER

FOREWORD :

Hi there, my darlings! As part of the FRIEND-AN-INDIE-FRIDAY featured giveaways, I'll also be posting a review of some of the new brand's creations as well as an exclusive interview with each maker, so people can get a little glimpse into the world of the face behind the brand! Today, I present Dave of Octopus Party Nail Lacquer!! Read on for a peek into the man behind the brand!

1. How did you first get into making polish?

Shopping for a friend's birthday sparked the idea. I bought her nail polish at Sally's, and it rekindled my interest in it. After looking up indie polish online, I decided I would give it a go.

2. What was the inspiration for the name Octopus Party Nail Lacquer?

Ha ha Octopus Party Nail Lacquer comes from my affinity for octopuses (since I was a child) and having fun. To me, it says color.

3. What inspires your collections (or where do you look for inspiration)?

For this first year, I'm focusing on seasonally appropriate colors that appeal to my tastes. I would make it if I wouldn't wear it!

4. Do you have a favorite indie maker(s)? Favorite mainstream brand?

Ha ha that seems like a trick question. I've met several incredibly gracious and kind makers, bloggers, swatches, customers, and polish fans in my short time doing this. I would say the community at large is a favorite of mine.

Some favorite brands I've tried and love are: Too Fancy Lacquer, Gothic Gala Lacquers, Carpe Noctem Cosmetics, Literary Lacquers, Ruby White Tips, Pretty Bitch Polish, Pretty Jelly, Ally's Dream Polish, Indigo Bananas, Pretty & Polished, Spectrum Cosmetics, Rainbow Honey, Ooh La Lacquer, Eat.Sleep.Polish., Smoky Mountain Lacquers, and Philly Loves Lacquer.

5. What are your go-to products for nail/cuticle care?

Uh. None. :-/

6. What are your favorite colors? In general? For summer? For fall?

In general, my favorite colors are green, blue, any combination of green and blue, silver, gold, and black. For summer, anything light or bright; neons are key. For the fall, gold is the winner.

7. This may be hard--but which are your 3 favorite creations so far?

Three favorites? How about seven? Spume-Fed, Ink or Swim, Where the Green Grass Glows, On the Cliff By the Shore, Frost Bites, and Laser Tag.

8. Do you have any other hobbies?

Music, art, literature, nature, food, travel, shenanigans, (more interests than hobbies) and socializing.

9. What is your most favorite thing about being a new indie maker? What are some of the challenges? What advice would you give to people considering starting their own brand? Overall, are you happy with your decision to get into the indie polish world?

My favorite thing about being a maker is all the nail polish. I've met ridiculously talented girls through this and have been fortunate enough to enjoy their products. It's simultaneously fun and inspiring. Seeing what everyone comes up with can be both thrilling and nerve wracking. I wasn't entirely prepared for everything that comes with running a little shop like this. I would be lying if I said the stress is always manageable. But the support I've received has been tremendous and vital to OPNL continuing. My advice for those interested in getting into making polish is to not lose sight of why you love it. It's cliche, but it can help in a pinch. Remembering how much happiness it brings me and those who like my lacquer makes any obstacle worth overcoming.

10. Fun facts :

Astrological sign : Capricorn

Favorite comfort food : All of them; food is comfort.

Favorite beauty item besides polish : Soap

Favorite fragrance : Dial soap (I really like soap)

Favorite vacation destination : Manhattan

Favorite candy : Starburst

Favorite celebrity : I've never really thought about it.

Favorite family member or friend (you can pick one of each) : My best friend is named Andy. Ha ha I'm not going to pick a favorite family member.

Most recent read : Most recent read was my email inbox.

Most recent movie you loved : Toy Story 3

Favorite TV show and character : The Simpsons / Rodger from American Dad!

If you won a million dollars, first thing you would buy is? If I won a million dollars I would invest it all in a ROTH IRA. I would then probably treat myself to a chai latte.

So there you have it, my darlings! A little glimpse into the world of Dave of Octopus Party Nail Lacquer!
