EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Taryn of ANCHOR & HEART LACQUER

FOREWORD :

Hi there, my darlings! As part of the current indie featured giveaway with Anchor & Heart Lacquer, I will be posting a review of some of the brand's latest creations soon but in the meantime, here's an exclusive interview with the maker, so people can get a little glimpse into the world of the face behind the brand! How can one get to know a brand without getting to know the maker a little, right? So, I present to you my interview with Taryn of Anchor & Heart Lacquer! Read on for a peek into the woman behind the brand!

1. How did you first get into making polish?

I was so intrigued by indie nail polish when I discovered it 2+ years ago on Instagram! All of these unique and beautiful shades - nail polish that I just wasn't seeing the likes of at Target, Sephora, etc! I started buying and loving indies, but sealed the deal was the connection with the makers and the community. I've always enjoyed creative endeavors so I decided to buy a few supplies and play around - if only for my own use. Well, two years later, lots of testing & development, and here we are as Anchor & Heart Lacquer!

2. What was the inspiration for the name "ANCHOR & HEART LACQUER"?

I knew I wanted the name to reflect the things that are important to me. I'm a bit of a goof, love my family and tend to wear my heart on my sleeve so I knew something sterile and high end didn't feel right. I settled on Anchor & Heart Lacquer because it is a nod to my upbringing in Portland, Maine and my dedication to my family and my two little boys. No matter where I am, or what I'm doing, they are my "Anchor & Heart". :)

3. What inspires your collections (or where do you look for inspiration)? What inspired your latest collection? Any hints/ideas about upcoming collections?

I work backwards most of the time, the polishes come before the collection inspiration. It can be challenging to come up with a theme once the collection is put together (based on what I'm enjoying from my creations) so I'm making an attempt moving forward to start with inspiration and then create polishes to match! So far collections have been close to home in terms of inspiration - family, friends, Maine, the beach. I have a summer lightning collection coming up so that will be fun!

4. Do you have a favorite indie maker(s)? Favorite mainstream brand?

I still occasionally use Essie or Zoya because they are already in my collections, but I haven't bought mainstream for more than a year. ;) There are so many indies that I love but I think my current favorites are Loaded Lacquer (my first indie), Candied Apple Polish (my second indie and I admin her FB fan page!), Illyrian, Top Shelf, and Frenzy.

5. What are your go-to products for nail/cuticle care?

So Much Goodness Bomb Balm is my go to right now - the Watermelon scent is so light and fresh! I also love Vapid's Nail Sauce in Peach!

6. What are your favorite colors? In general? For summer? For fall?

Purple and green in general, and anything dark and vampy for fall. My skin has a lot of red undertones so I struggle with spring colors, but I love bright colors for summer! I usually only wear neons on my toes.

7. This may be hard--but which are your 3 favorite creations so far?

That is hard.....I'd have to say Shattered Sea Glass, The Rock, and.......maybe Sweet Love? That one was an accident that has ended up being my best seller!

8. Do you have any other hobbies? Are you involved with any other clubs, associations, or recreational activities?

I'm a stay at home mom so I spend more of my time with my two boys - Maxwell (6 months) and Hendrix (10 years). They are the sweetest! I am a bit of a planner addict and in my free down time (not often) I working on decorating and recording "life" in my planners! They are fun to look back on weeks or months later!

9. What is your most favorite thing about being an indie maker? What are some of the challenges? What advice would you give to people considering starting their own brand? Overall, are you happy with your decision to get into the indie polish world?

I am absolutely happy that I decided to start Anchor & Heart! It's realyl fun, I love the creative energy, and I absolutely adore my customers. They have been so kind, supportive, caring, and as cliche as it sounds, seeing their nail mail photos might be my most favorite part of it all! I love knowing that I was able to help make their day a little better. :) My advice to those who want to start is....it's not cheap. If you want to have a great, legit, quality product, get ready to spend hundreds of dollars before you even open your shop doors. And you have to really, really like people. I make polish 50% of the time, and communicate with customers and my social medial the other 50% of the time! It works for me, but that's not everyone's jam. Definitely consider that. ;)
